Point Lobos: The Most Beautiful Coastal Trail in Central California

There are places along the California coast that leave a lasting impression on you. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is one of them. It’s the kind of place where every turn feels like a viewpoint, and the best part is that you don’t need a long or difficult trail to experience it.

This post is about Point Lobos: The Most Beautiful Coastal Trail in Central California.

Point Lobos views

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is located south of Carmel-by-the-Sea along California’s Central Coast, about 4.5 miles from downtown Carmel and roughly 2 hours south of San Francisco.

This protected natural reserve is known for its beautiful sights, coastal viewpoints, and Monterey cypress groves that grow right along the coast. The park was created to preserve both the landscape and the wildlife, making it one of the most popular places for coastal hikes, photography, and wildlife viewing.

The main entrance to Point Lobos is located just off Highway 1. Once you enter the park, you’ll go through the entrance station where you pay the day-use fee ($10) and receive a trail map. From there, you’ll reach a small parking area (approx. 150 spots) that connects directly to different trailheads.

Because parking inside the reserve is limited, the best chance of getting a spot is early in the morning when the park opens. When the lots are full, free parking is available along Highway 1 just outside the entrance.
